Ottawa Engagement Photographer Guide: Essential Tips for Perfect Photos
Welcome to your ultimate guide to preparing for an engagement session! Capturing the love and joy between you and your partner is one of the most exciting parts of your journey together. As an Ottawa engagement photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many wonderful couples, and I know that a little preparation can make a world of difference. This guide is designed to help you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to shine in front of the camera. Whether you’re dreaming of a romantic sunset session in Gatineau Park or a vibrant cityscape in downtown Ottawa, these tips will ensure your engagement photos are as beautiful and unique as your love story.
An engagement session is not just about the photos; it's also about the experience. It’s a time to celebrate your love story, have fun, and create memories that you’ll cherish forever. By preparing well, you can ensure that your session is relaxed and enjoyable, allowing your true personalities and connection to shine through. This guide will cover everything from choosing outfits and locations to managing the weather and incorporating personal touches.
When planning your engagement session, think about the story you want to tell. Your photos should reflect who you are as a couple, capturing both your unique style and the essence of your relationship. Whether you’re outdoorsy, love the city, or prefer a cozy indoor setting, there are endless possibilities to explore. Remember, the most important thing is to be yourselves and have fun!
What to Expect
My engagement sessions are fun and relaxed. I try to avoid posing, while instead offering prompts that allow you and your partner to share organic moments together. That doesn't mean that I won't offer suggestions, or ask you to move a hand or to look in a certain direction; it simply means that I won't micro-manage your every move, resulting in photos that are more natural.
We'll spend our time together exploring and creating, which will provide you with a beautiful set of images that you can use for save the dates, guest books, or simply to have as a keepsake of this special time in your life. Each session is a unique adventure, capturing the essence of your love story in a way that feels genuine and spontaneous.
Vibe & Themes
It can be a fun idea to go on Pinterest and make a board of the types of photos that appeal to you. Can you find a vibe or a theme?
Another way of doing this is to think about hobbies and interests that are important to you as a couple and incorporate that into your session.
Some theme ideas could include romantic European, retro, edgy urban, romantic urban, after dark, wildflowers, summer evenings, cottage core, etc.
Some activities you could lean into include a trip to the beach, playing guitar together, a picnic, picking apples, hiking, breakfast at home, swimming, having a campfire, visiting your favourite brewery or coffee shop, a romantic boat ride, getting a tattoo together...please always feel free to get creative!
When couples come to me with a vision for their photos, it really helps me be able to provide a curated gallery specific to you.

Preparing for your engagement session
Outfit Planning
Coordinate, Don’t Match: Choose outfits that complement each other rather than match. For example, if one person wears a pastel plaid shirt, the other might choose a soft blue dress.
Seasonal Considerations: Dress appropriately for the weather and location. Layers are essential for winter sessions, while lighter, breathable fabrics work best for summer.
Comfort is Key: Wear outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. Make sure everything fits well and allows you to move freely.
Footwear: Choose practical footwear for the location. If the session involves walking on uneven terrain, consider wearing comfortable shoes and bringing your stylish ones for specific shots.
Accessories: Include accessories like hats, scarves, and statement jewelry to add variety and detail to your photos.
Multiple Outfits: Bringing two outfits—one casual and one formal—can provide a diverse range of photos. Plan where to change if you choose this option.
Weather-Appropriate: Dress for the weather to ensure comfort and natural-looking photos. A summer dress in winter or a heavy coat in the summer will not only be uncomfortable but also look out of place.
Hair and Makeup
Professional Services: Having your hair and makeup done professionally can enhance your look and ensure it lasts throughout the session. Consider this as a trial run for your wedding day.
Manicures: Well-groomed nails are a must, as close-up shots of hands and rings are common.
Weather-Proof: Choose hairstyles and makeup that can withstand the weather conditions on the day of your session. Bring touch-up products if necessary.
Timing and Light
Golden Hour: Schedule your session during the golden hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) for the most flattering light.
Avoid Rush Hours: Plan your session at a time that avoids heavy traffic and rushing from work, so you can arrive relaxed and ready.
Seasonal Adjustments: Depending on the season, the start time of your session may vary. Winter sessions may start as early as 3:30 PM to catch the sunset.
Location Selection
Reflect Your Personality: Choose a location that reflects your interests and personalities, whether it’s a natural setting, urban landscape, or a place with personal significance.
Popular Spots: Some favorite locations include Gatineau Park for its diverse scenery, urban areas in downtown Ottawa for a city vibe, and local parks for a natural backdrop.
Pet-Friendly: If you plan to include your pet, ensure the location is pet-friendly and bring someone to help manage your pet during the session.

Weather Considerations
Rain Plan: Have a plan in place for rainy weather. Clear umbrellas and cute Wellies can make for charming photos.
Seasonal Benefits: Each season offers unique advantages. Spring brings fresh flowers, summer provides long days and vibrant colors, fall offers stunning foliage, and winter can create a cozy, romantic atmosphere.
Rescheduling: Be prepared to reschedule if weather conditions are extreme. It’s helpful to have a backup date in mind.
Personal Touches
Props and Accessories: Consider bringing props that are meaningful to you, such as a bottle of champagne, a bouquet of flowers, or a favorite blanket.
Incorporate Hobbies: If you have hobbies or interests, include items that represent them, like a guitar, bicycle, or books.
General Tips
Relax and Have Fun: The most important thing is to enjoy the session. Your comfort and happiness will shine through in the photos.
Communicate with Your Photographer: Share your vision, preferences, and any concerns with your photographer to ensure the session meets your expectations.
Hydrate and Rest: Make sure to stay hydrated and get a good night's sleep before your session to look and feel your best.
Pockets and Bags: Make sure your pockets are empty to avoid bulges in your photos. Consider leaving bags and extra items behind or having your photographer carry them.
