A Community Comes Together for a Cause

On April 12, 2025, the Brookstreet Hotel was filled with warmth and purpose as guests gathered for the 16th annual Maddy’s Gala. The event honours the life of Maddy Otto and raises essential support for Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice, part of the CHEO network.

What started as a small gathering organized by Maddy’s family has become one of Ottawa’s most impactful charitable events. Each year, the gala brings together local businesses, families, and supporters for an evening that blends remembrance with celebration.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look

Before guests entered the ballroom, we captured the quieter, behind-the-scenes moments. The decor details were thoughtful and full of heart—from the custom ice sculpture and silent auction tables to the teddy bear station and early committee huddle.

The Otto family gathered for portraits in front of the event backdrop. The room buzzed with last-minute preparations and a sense of anticipation that made these early moments particularly special to document.

A Heartfelt Program

Once doors opened, guests were welcomed with live violin music, freshly shucked oysters from The Whalesbone, and the warm presence of the Otto family. It was a room filled with familiar faces and new supporters coming together for a shared purpose.

The formal program began with Patricia Boal as MC and a standing welcome for the Otto family. The memorial slideshow played shortly after, creating an emotional pause in the evening and grounding everyone in the reason for the night.

Celebration and Generosity

The energy in the room shifted as the live auction got underway. Guests raised their paddles with enthusiasm and generosity, followed by the always-popular game of Heads and Tails that had everyone laughing.

A special walk-in TV moment surprised guests, adding another unique element to an already meaningful evening. As the formal program wrapped up, the dance floor opened and guests continued to celebrate well into the night.

Why It Matters

Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice plays a vital role in providing palliative care, support services, and compassionate end-of-life care for children and their families. As part of the CHEO network, the hospice ensures that no family faces these challenges alone.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, donors, and guests, this year’s gala raised $149,713.21—funds that will go directly toward helping families receive the comfort and support they need.
